Circular Road

This 4-storey conservation shophouse is within walking distance of Clarke Quay and Raffles Place MRT Stations. Circular Road branches out of South Bridge Road and follows the path of Boat Quay. It used to be the first Teochew enclave and a textile district.

New migrants in the Boat Quay area in the 1800s from various regions of Chaozhou province picked up speaking Teochew as it was known as the Teochew quarters. Started as a swampy area, it grew into the busiest port in Singapore, handling up to three quarters of the maritime trade in Singapore. It was an important commercial venue for businesses due to its close proximity to the Singapore River. The south of the river here resembles the “belly of a carp” – an auspicious symbol where wealth and prosperity lies.

Today, it is a popular nightlife spot where the work crowd and tourists gather. Many of the original buildings have been preserved and are now places of entertainment including various restaurants, bars and offices. The area is also part of the vibrant Raffles Place office sub-market.
